The initiative was founded by Frank Roy, an electrical engineer
by profession with a long background in astronomy. The idea of
building a world class state-of-the-art telescope materialized
in early October of 2007. It is mainly driven by a deep appreciation
of the night sky and a desire to make a contribution to the advancement
of astronomy and to expose young minds to one of the most profound
aspects of our existence; the awesome view of the night sky.
The project will also have a significant economic
impact to the region in terms of job creattion and economic
activity, this will driven by tourism as the facility is expectd
to become a key tourist destination
for the area.
The area of the Observatory is truly exceptional where the Milky
Way cast a shadow and some 10,000 stars can be seen with the unaided
eye. The zodiacal light and sky glow are a common occurrence.
The gegenschien an extremely faint and elusive glow, almost unknown
except to those who are privileged to be under the darkest nights,
is often seen at the site. It is views like this that are at the
core of this project..
The One Metre Initiative (OMI) logo is based on the ancient Egyptian
sky goddess Nut (NOOT). It is ancient symbology and dates to early
Egyptian predynastic times (c. 3200 B.C.E). To the ancient Egyptians
Nut was the personification of the night sky and the heavens.
The icon in the address bar
is the hieroglyphic way to write Nut.
